Support / Install page for our full-size replacement display & PCB for the Game Boy DMG-01

Notes

The manufacturer includes double sided tape to fix the LCD to the upper shell. Due to the fragile construction of the LCD panel, we have designed a drop-in bracket and these install directions are written based on this bracket. We strongly recommend against installing the panel with tape! Repositioning the screen to center the display will be very challenging and future removal will be even worse once the tape has bonded with the shell.

v1/v2: You may notice that the full size replacement PCB for the upper shell has 4 slots that correspond with 4 tabs on the back of the LCD. The manufacturer may have applied anti-shorting tape to the LCD panel which prevents these tabs from being used. We don't recommend using this method either as the image will not be centered by default. If you do bend the tabs to center the image, the metal tabs will end up at a 45 degree angle and the screen will wobble / float. Alignment issues are further exacerbated as you can only utilize 3 out of 4 tabs due to the location of the miniature LCD driver PCB.

We have had multiple reports of damage to the LCD when using the tabs. Do not use them!

Tools Required

  1. Philips or Triwing screwdriver
  2. Soldering iron & solder
  3. Diagonal cutters
  4. Hobby knife


Disassembly

  1. Remove battery cover & batteries
  2. Remove 6 screws holding shell together (4 exposed, 2 inside battery compartment)
  3. Detach ribbon cable connecting CPU & LCD boards
  4. Remove 10 screws holding DMGLCD board to upper shell
  5. Remove DMGLCD board, pads, buttons, and set aside


Prep

  1. Flush cut 2x original LCD screw posts
  2. Flush cut 1x shell tab
  3. Flush cut edge trim opposite of contrast wheel
  4. Inspect CPU PCB soldering and flush-cut solder points


Assembly: Part 1

  1. Desolder and swap speaker to new PCB
  2. Gently bend alignment bracket and snap new LCD in to place.
  3. Connect LCD interface board to LCD. This is a double-row connector - ensure ribbon is fully seated into the interface PCB before closing the connector lock.
  4. Cut and apply a very very small piece of double-sided tape and attach interface PCB to back of LCD
  5. Connect thin flat cable to interface PCB
  6. Insert bracket/LCD into upper shell
  7. Temporarily refit new PCB and connect LCD
  8. Connect large ribbon cable to the new control board PCB first - PINS FACING UP
  9. Connect large ribbon to DMG-CPU board - PINS FACING UP
Why connect the large ribbon cable to the control board first?
The new connector will be more stiff than the original DMG-CPU board. It's easier to make this connection first where you can get a better handle on things.
Why pins facing up? Are the connectors double-sided
Yes they are, but we have noticed that the control board is more responsive when then pins face up, which is how the original LCD was connected

Testing

  1. Align upper and lower shell, replace middle 2 screws to close case fully for binding check (listed below)
  2. Power on unit
  3. Test contrast wheel for binding.
    1. If wheel does not spin freely, ensure shell tab is fully removed and that case screws are not over tightened.
    2. If palette button binds, check wheel for witness marks indicating drag against DMG-CPU board solder connections.


Assembly: Final

  1. Remove new PCB, replace buttons and conductive pads
  2. Secure and fasten LCD PCB to upper shell at 6 points shown in photo below
  3. Close shell and replace 6x shell screws. Note that extra resistance is normal due to folding the large connecting ribbon between boards.


Troubleshooting

Power light comes on but nothing happens
When I power on, I see Pikachu or other static image, which fades out?
This seems to be triggered by a power-on test mode on the LCD driver board. Check that all ribbon cables are fully seated.
Controllers are not very responsive
Check that the controller PCB is installed flush to the upper shell mounting posts. 3rd party brackets may be too thick
Install the large ribbon cable so that the contact pins are facing away from the boards. Refer to the original DMG-LCD ribbon for reference. It really makes a difference.
I've removed & replaced the large ribbon cable so many times that it's difficult to insert properly
Flatten the end as best as possible, then make two very small 45-degree diagonal cuts on the corners of the white backing. The corners tend to bunch up and trimming them can help to start the cable into the connector. We also carry replacement cables.
